Photo exhibition on Bangabandhu

The month-long photography exhibition on the life and struggle of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is underway at the Dhaka International Trade Fair 2017 at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.

The exhibition is titled “The life and struggle of the country’s founding father and president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangaldesh.”

The pavilion’s name is “Bangabandhu and Bangladesh” situated beside the help center of Export Promotion Bureau at the fair.

The exhibitions began on January 1 when it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, worthy daughter of Bangabandhu.

Different photos of the country’s founding president are being shown at the exhibition, depicting diverse interest and milestones of Bangabandhu’s life.

The photos show various stages of Bangabandhu’s life beginning from being a lively youth, a keen footballer, a philanthropist, a student leader, an anti-British rule activist, a Language Movement leader, leader of the six-point programme, the mass upsurge of 1969, the election of 1970, the historic March 7 speech of 1971, the Liberation War and his lifelong struggle for the rights of Bangalees, including imprisonments suffered.

Most of the paintings on display are figurative portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman while some had indirect references to him, for example, his spectacles and smoking pipe that have become part of his cult status. Some of the works are semi-abstract too.

Abdul Malek from old Dhaka said: “I have come here with my two sons, Abu Talib and Saifullah, so that they could know about Bangabandhu.”

“They are the new generation of the country.  So I think they should know the details about Sheikh Mujib and Bangladesh.”

Sajib Hasan, a caretaker of the exhibition said: “On the first weekend of the month-long fair, there was a significant influx of visitors at the exhibition. The number of visitors on holiday was massive.”

“Tomorrow is Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day. So many people are expected to visit the exhibition,” he said yesterday.

However, on January 10 in 1972, the undisputed leader of the then Pakistan and the architect of the country’s independence, returned to independent Bangladesh after over nine and a half months’ confinement in a Pakistani prison.

The Export Promotion Bureau and the Ministry of Commerce has been organizing the fair since 1995.
